Once we have a grasp of the “basic rules of canine urination and defecation,” we can move on to understanding when the “best time to train your dog to use the toilet” is:
1. Post-Meal Elimination
Dogs are more likely to want to use the toilet shortly after eating. Therefore, after each meal (the duration can be determined by observing the dog’s habits), take your dog to the same designated spot to “wait.” Once your dog shows signs of wanting to go to the toilet, encourage it. (Remember: this is the best time to toilet train your dog!!)
Over time, your dog will learn that this is something to be praised for. In the future, it will “actively” go to the toilet in the spot you often take it to after meals. Whenever your dog eliminates in the designated spot, be sure to verbally encourage it with positive reinforcement, such as saying “Good job!!” or giving it a tasty treat.
Additional Tips for Dog Owners:
Positive Reinforcement, Not Punishment: During toilet training, if your dog does not make it to the designated spot in time, do not scold or punish it harshly. Instead, use positive reinforcement to establish the correct behavior. Repeat the encouraging words and praise in a positive tone each time your dog eliminates in the correct spot. This will help it remember where it is and is not okay to go.
Timing is Key: Remember that dogs learn using associative memory. Therefore, all of the above encouragement must be given immediately after the dog performs the desired action. Additionally, memory and learning take time to develop, and it cannot be achieved in a day or two. Dog owners need to be patient.
Indoor Accidents: If your puppy makes a mess indoors, do not punish it physically. Instead, use a low, disapproving voice as a form of punishment. You should try to anticipate when your puppy needs to go to the toilet. Generally, these times are: in the morning, after eating, when stimulated, and before and after naps.
