Training a dog to catch a Frisbee is a classic sports training. In fact, not only dogs like it, but people also like to play it. Moreover, this activity is usually carried out outdoors. In addition to having fun with the dog, you can also exercise more. Why not do it?
1. We have to start with food
What, dogs have to be trained to eat food before training Frisbees? ? Haha, that’s right, dogs are not so smart. If you don’t do some preparatory exercises first, the dog may squat and watch you throw the Frisbee for a long time without doing anything. First, you have to take out some food, such as small pieces of biscuits or beef jerky. Let the dog sit forward first, then take out the biscuits or beef jerky and let it sniff it, and step back a few steps, face it and give the command “catch”, and throw the biscuits in the direction of its mouth. If the biscuit is thrown just above its nose, most of the purchases can be caught with their mouths, and the dog owner will let the dog eat the biscuit to reward and reinforce it. (For detailed methods, please refer to the above “Catching objects in the air”)
2. The process of constantly training the dog to throw biscuits
We must constantly let the dog practice catching biscuits. If it can’t catch it, you should quickly pick up the biscuit on the ground and throw it back to it. Only when the dog catches the biscuit in the air can it be allowed to eat it as reinforcement. After several exercises, the dog will understand that the owner’s purpose is to ask it to catch the biscuit in the air. Soon, the dog will be able to master the skills of this game.
3. Find other objects to replace biscuits
When the dog reaches the above ability, the dog owner can use other objects to replace biscuits, such as a ball to replace biscuits for training. At this time, the dog’s motivation is not biscuits, but games. The dog owner can let the dog sit or stand, take out the ball and give it the command “catch”, and throw the ball up. Because the dog has mastered the skills of the game, it can often catch it easily.
4. The dog owner asks the dog to come to him and spit out the ball, giving it a reward. This training ends.
With such frequent training, the dog’s desire for games is getting higher and higher, and the skills of catching objects are becoming more and more proficient, and it often jumps up to catch the ball in the air. If the dog has this reaction, you should fully encourage and reward it, and encourage it to jump up and catch the object in the air during training, so as to cultivate the dog’s grasp of the timing of jumping and the skills of catching objects until it is proficient.
5. Directly replace with a frisbee.
The ball is no problem, and you can start training with a frisbee. The speed of the frisbee should be slow at the beginning. The dog owner stands in front of the dog’s right side, throws the frisbee in front of the dog, and gives it a “catch” command. Most dogs will run to the frisbee at high speed and jump to catch it. If the dog succeeds, the dog owner should fully reward it to stimulate its interest. If it cannot catch it, the training should be repeated until it succeeds. As the dog’s ability improves, the dog owner should change direction and speed to cultivate its ability to catch objects.
Training points:
1. Stop when the dog is playing happily, so that it will want to play again next time.
2. Before training your dog to play with a frisbee, first train the dog to play with something it likes, and be careful to choose softer objects.
3. Pay attention to the early training and do it on soft grass to avoid the dog getting hurt.
