“Jumping” is also an important and basic training. Imagine if your dog can’t even jump, if you take it out for a trip, there will inevitably be a small ditch or bump: you “slip~” past it, and when you turn around, your dog is still looking at you helplessly on the opposite side; you have to “slip~” jump back to catch it, and then hold the dog and “slip~” jump over again… How painful it is! In order to avoid such pain, you should train your dog in advance. There are two ways to train jumping: 1. Small board wall training; 2. Horizontal bar training. You can choose any one.
3.3.1, Small board wall training:
Training method: First start with training the small board wall. In the early stage of training, the height of the small board wall should be 30-40cm.
1. You can lead the dog to 5-6 steps away from the small board wall, run with the dog to the front of the small board wall, give the command “jump”, and at the same time pull the leash to the upper front of the non-board wall to encourage the dog to jump over, and give rewards when the dog jumps over. This kind of training can be repeated 2-3 times at the same time.
2. If the dog dares not jump over, you should jump over it first, and then pull the leash to induce the dog to jump over.
3. When the dog dares to pass under the guidance, gradually let the dog pass by itself according to the command. That is, let the dog sit 2-3 steps away from the small board wall first, and the trainer gestures one end of the leash, walks to the side in front of the small board wall, and asks the dog to come, and gives the command “jump”, and pulls the leash in the direction of the small board wall.
4. Reward the dog in time after passing. After repeated training like this, the height of the small board wall can be gradually increased. If your dog refuses to jump over the board with you, it is probably because the obstacle you placed is too high. In order to cultivate its self-confidence, we must do it again, change to a lower board, and give the dog more encouragement. Don’t worry, as long as it jumps once, it feels that there is nothing to be afraid of, and it will be much easier next time.
Precautions for “small board wall training”:
1. Using coercive means in training can easily make the dog afraid of obstacles. Therefore, coercion should be moderate, training should be successful, rewards should be sufficient, and then the dog’s passive state should be transformed and eliminated as soon as possible through guidance.
2. Do not train too many times in a row at the same time. Each training should end with rewards after successful completion, and do not discourage the dog’s enthusiasm. It is not easy to train after a full meal.
3. Check whether the training equipment is firm and intact frequently. Do not train on rainy and snowy days to prevent accidents.
3.3.2, horizontal bar exercise:
1. Use toys or food that the dog likes to attract its attention and increase the dog’s driving force. This is very important for training. If the dog is not interested in toys, it should be trained to like toys first. It is a good method for the owner to use more toys when playing with it.
2. The owner straddles the horizontal bar and shakes the toy on the horizontal bar to make the dog feel the urge to jump over the horizontal bar. If the dog jumps, it should be rewarded. The height of the training horizontal bar should start from the lowest. Make sure it can jump over and have confidence in future jumps. The horizontal bar should not be too high at the beginning, and 20-40cm is recommended.
3. If the dog doesn’t want to jump over the bar, the owner can lead the dog, throw the toy, and let the dog jump over the bar together. Gradually let the dog jump over the bar by himself following the thrown toy.
4. The reward after the dog jumps over is very important and must be quick. Petting, toys, and food are all fine, which can let the dog know what the person wants it to do.
Notes on “bar training”:
When training a dog to jump high, the height of the bar needs special attention, and it should be as low as possible to ensure that the dog cannot drill under the bar. Because the experience of not drilling through once may make it remember for a long time and no longer be willing to jump over the bar. Some friends are worried about whether the dog can jump over a 30 or 40cm bar? In fact, as long as your dog develops normally, without pregnancy, rheumatism, back or leg problems, the height it jumps to is at least 1-1.5 times its shoulder height.
In other words, a medium-sized dog can jump at least 1 meter high, so please rest assured. (But if you have a small dog like Pomeranian or poodle, forget it~)
